What does being S'porean mean?

In an era of telecommunications and international migration, what is the meaning of being a “Singaporean” today? Is “Singaporean” becoming a mere label of citizenship, or does it entail a deeper relationship between one’s sense of self and the nation?

As Singapore continues to embark on nation building and welcomes a new wave of immigrants to the country, we ask the important question: how does one become “Singaporean”?

NTU sociological society (NTUSS) presents a public forum bringing together student speakers from National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University as well as members of the public to investigate issues of a "Singaporean identity" in this globalized world.

north spine complex Calling out to all non-sociology freshmen & seniors!

Since all sociology majors are automatically members of the club, but, this is the chance for everyone who is interested in engaging in social issues, always wondered about the ‘taken-for-granted’ elements/routines in everyday life, and to become aware of social problems around us. Now is the time!

Head on down to North Spine @ NTU from Monday, (17th August) to Wednesday (19th August) 5pm, and visit our booth which is located at level 2, just a short walk away from Wee-Nam Library. If you have any questions, just drop by!!

Hello all!

First of all, we’d like to thank everyone for voting for the t-shirt designs. We also wish to thank those who have provided us with feedbacks and suggestions.

And it is thus our pleasure to announce that we will be printing the top three designs - Marx, Durkheim and Cooley. In addition to this, we are also including a mosaic design.

However, to ensure the cost-effectiveness of the printing of the t-shirts, we will need a minimum of 30 orders for each design. In the event that the minimum of 30 orders is not met for any particular design(s), that design(s) will then be called off. We will contact those who are affected by the call-off and make other arrangements if possible.

The t-shirt will cost $15 each, and is available in WHITE cotton (with the design in black).

UPDATED (7 Jan):

1. Due to some feedbacks that we have received against the existing Weber design, a second version of Weber has been drawn up. As some members have already actually voted for the original Weber design and have expressed a liking for it, the original design remains.

The new design shall be referred to as "Weber 2" and due to technical reasons, we are not able to add in this new option on to the existing polls. Instead, a second poll is made available specifically on this new design. So vote "Yes" if this new design is your favourite. If not, you can choose "No" or simply ignore it.

2. The voting date is now extended until Friday, 16th Jan.

We value your feedbacks. So please keep them coming. In the event that you rather not make your feedbacks public, you may contact us directly through our emails listed here.

We are delighted to announce the coming launch of t-shirts with exclusive designs based on theorists that we have come to love (or hate!).

Unfortunately, in order to keep the costs of each t-shirt down, we will only select one of the above possible designs to be printed. And since the t-shirts are for you, please vote for your favourite design. You may do so through the poll on the right side of this website.

You may select more than one design as your favourite but please vote each design only once. We will start taking orders once the most popular design is identified.

Voting is open to all members and non-members of the club and is open until 8th Jan 2009. So vote now!

Recruitment for the 1st NTUSS committee is now on! And we are open to all students of NTU. So, regardless of your school, you are eligible to be part of the family.

1. MAIN MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Nominations will be held this coming Thursday (14 August 2008), between 9am and 5pm, at the HSS Student Lounge.

The following positions are open:

CO-PRESIDENT (2 vacancies)

BUSINESS MANAGER (1 vacancy)

We have news too! The SAO has finally allocated us a Tier for the Society (the ranking system used to classify Clubs and Societies in the University).

We are officially in Tier 4 meaning:

- The 2 Co-Presidents will each receive 5 points for their contributions
- The Main Comm and Sub-Comm members will each receive 3 points for their contributions

So what are you waiting for? We have positions up for grabs so do cast your nominations and register your interest as soon as possible!

For those interested in Main Comm positions, please do not email us just yet! We are in the middle of finalising the Elections Committee and applications/nominations will only be open on the 11th of August.

For those interested in Sub-Comm positions, feel free to email us anytime to indicate your interest!

Given that we are now one big complete family (Year 1 to Masters students!) Tis time to encourage all those interested in helping us make YOUR University life funky and stimulating. The NTUSS will be holding it's inaugural elections in the third week of August.

Third week of August you say? That's pretty darn near! Just two weeks away!

Yup, it is and we want YOU to be a part of it. If you think you have what it takes to lead, plan, execute and have a rockin' good time with NTU undergrads, do sign up or nominate someone for the positions stated in the flyer below.

The NTUSS is open to ALL NTU students so even if you are from Engineering but have a keen interest in all things sociological (which is pretty much everything actually), you are eligible to run!

You do not have to be a Soci major to belong to this Society nor a Soci major to run for Main Comm or Sub-Comm positions! How cool and egalitarian is that?!

Some shameless advertising on our own site... but hey! It's for a good cause!

We are constantly raising funds for the activities that we are planning for our members (all Sociology majors by default are members). Further, we aren't charging any membership fees! We understand that as students, we are all on a tight budget and we do not believe in charging you for activities that will enhance, flavour and colour YOUR undergraduate experience.

Hence, we have our little Lelong sessions in a bid to raise funds for the society.

We have a lovely new link called "Shop" so do visit the site. We are selling books at an unbelievable $2. Some of these books are really rare first editions or have already gone out of print.

Do take time to browse the titles and if you are interested, leave us a note and we will get back to you!

Don't forget, we still have our VERY OWN SOCIOLOGY BADGES going at $2 for a set of 3 or $1 per design.

Good news! Our application for the formation of NTU Sociological Society has been approved by SAO!

We are now an officially recognized society!

All sociology students are automatically members of the society and students from other faculty are welcomed to join in.

The existing Protem Committee members will continue to organize events for the current semester. So, do look out for upcoming activites.

Sociology Society gains official status

FOR two years, they operated as an unofficial club with` more than 200 members, inviting speakers like Worker’s Party leader Sylvia Lim to give lectures in NTU, among other events they organised.

Last month, the NTU Sociological Society finally gained official status from the Student Affairs Office (SAO). Before that, SAO had recommended the Society be a sub-club of the existing Humanities and Social Sciences Club, but the Society decided against it, citing “differences in objectives and goals”.

With this new standing, the Society has plans for bigger projects and events. They are currently working on giving students a chance to be research assistants under the supervisions of professors.

Besides an on-going lecture series from guest speakers, a public forum on undergraduate education will be held in August that will also involve the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University.

Although sociology students gain automatic membership, the Society welcomes all NTU students.

Open membership, while appreciated, failed to elicit much interest from second-year Computer Science student Wendy Zhong, 23, who worried that it will be hard for students like her to pick up enough knowledge on sociology to enjoy the activities planned.

“The activities proposed seem more relevant to sociology students,” she said,.

To address such concerns, Co-President Hemavalli S.Padmanathan, 23, a third-year Sociology student said the Society is looking at collaboration with other faculties, through which “interdisciplinary education and cross-faculty collaboration on projects will better prepare students for the working world.”
